Destin, Florida Fishing Report for Inshore & Bay Fishing

1/21/2019

Happy New Years to everyone from the crew at Destin Inshore Guides.  We started the year off right with getting out on the water with bent rods.  Thank you to the clients that were visiting Destin, Florida for new years and started the year off fishing with us.

Our weather continues to have crazy swings and there has been no norm so far this winter.  This past weekend we had our first true cold snap with temps getting down to 30 degrees.   Hopefully with the pressure change with this cold snap it will get the bayou fishing right were it should be for this time of the year.  We are still having several pretty days a week to get on the water so if you are planning a charter with us while visiting Destin, Florida soon we advise being flexible on dates if possible.

In the back bay of the Destin Florida we are still focusing on deeper water areas to fish.  This time of the year some of the most productive days are fishing around bridges and jetties.  Some recent catches include redfish, blackdrum and sheephead around the pillings bridges.  Sheepheads are one of the trickiest fish to catch but once you get the technique down, it will be one of your favorite fish to target.  These fish are well known for their human teeth and their ability to clean you hook without leaving a trace of being there.  So remember to keep a close eye of the rod tip, hold it as still as you can, and check your bait often because they are sneaky.  While fishing docks on recent Destin bay charters we have caught a mixture of redfish, sheepshead, blackdrum, bluefish, and speckled trout.

As for gulf fishing in Destin, Florida for this time of the year we are primarily focusing bottom fishing.  With the new year the new season have been posted and the vast majority of species are still closed going into the season.  These species include amberjacks, redsnappers, and triggerfish but there are still a variety of snappers to target.   While bottom fishing we have been targeting mingo snappers, mangrove snappers, white snappers, and a variety of porgies which are all great eating.  Although we cant keep triggers, amberjack, and redsnappers they are a blast to catch and they make awesome photos before releasing.  As always if you are looking for a pull of a lifetime while fishing in Destin, Florida there are plenty of shark around.

Stay tuned for our next blog featuring all the posted seasons for amberjacks, triggers, and redsnappers for our 2019 Destin Fishing Season.

If you are planing a trip to Destin, Florida this winter, Destin Inshore Guides fishes year around so be sure to give us a call and let us take you out to catch your next memory of a lifetime. Till next time Tight Lines.

Destin, Florida Inshore Bay Fishing and Near Shore Gulf Fishing Report for December

12/20/2018

It's the holiday season in Destin, Florida.  Merry Christmas and Happy New Years to everyone.  If visiting over the holidays there is plenty to do through the holiday season.  Check out the Destin boat Christmas parade which concludes with fireworks on the harbor in Destin, FL.  As for New Year eve Harbor walk village will be doing the annual pelican drop and there are plenty of places to hangout and have a great time along the harbor in Destin, Florida.

Here lately in Destin, Florida we have been having some crazy weather patterns but are finding a few days pretty days a week between the fronts to get our Destin inshore fishing on.  There are fish to be caught but with cold fronts coming through some days can be tougher then others.  Keep in mind with cooler water temps fish are a lot less active and it tends to take a little longer to get bites as fish are roaming around slower.  So while fishing don’t give up too soon and keep at it.

In the back bay of the Destin Florida  it’s that time of the year the speckled trout migrate towards the rivers to get ready to spawn over the next couple months.  As the vast majority of the trout will be found close to the rivers and in the rivers there are still a few around in the bayous to be caught.  Remember if using lures to slow your retrieve down.  Its also that time of the year to start seeing the bull reds working baits in deeper water.  You can generally find the redfish in the deep water with the help of the birds.  If you see birds working the water it’s always a good sign and generally a for sure sign that there are predator fish feeding and pushing the baits to the surface.  Here lately we have also been catching blackdrum and sheephead around the pillings bridges.  Yup it’s time for the annual cleaning of the bridge pillings.  Make sure to bring a scraper or shovel fishing if you’re targeting sheepshead so be able to scrap some barnacle off the pillings to chum the sheephead up.  If fishing docks look for a mixture of redfish, sheepshead, blackdrum, and speckled trout.

As for gulf fishing the primary type of fishing going on is bottom fishing.  The vast majority of species are closed for the year including amberjacks, redsnappers, and triggerfish but there are still a variety of snappers to target.   While bottom fishing we have been targeting mingo snappers, mangrove snappers, white snappers, and a variety of porgies which are all great eating.  There is plenty of action though between triggers and redsnappers to have a blast and they make awesome photos before releasing.  Although it hasn’t been the best year for flounder there flat fish are still around and can be caught on inshore wrecks.

Check back next month as the new seasons for amberjacks and trigger fish will be announced for the 2019 season.  Redsnapper season is generally not finalized til around April.

If you are planing a trip to Destin, Florida this winter, Destin Inshore Guides fishes year around so be sure to give us a call and let us take you out to catch your next memory of a lifetime. Till next time Tight Lines.

Destin, Florida Fishing Report for Inshore Bay Fishing Charters and Near shore Gulf

11/27/2018

It's November, colder weather and hunting season is upon us.  The days are shorter and the temps are colder but there is still fish to be caught.  The challenge this time of the year is finding pretty days to get on the water with fronts coming through frequently.  This is one of my favorite time of the year to fish because sometimes it feels like you have the entire bay or gulf to yourself.

On our Inshore bay fishing charters the bite has been good most days.  The cold weather has cooled down the big time and we are no longer seeing red tide.  All of the bait has moved to deeper water and our main two baits now are live shrimp and artificial lures.  In the fall and winter when the water temps drop fish begin to move slower so remember to be patient and work any artificial lure slower.  As far as what is being caught we have been seeing good numbers of blackdrum around structure.  While fishing for blackdrum we are also catching redfish and some sheepsheads as well.  In the back bay there is a mixture of redfish, speckled trout, and white trout to be caught.  Majority of the flounder have migrated out to inshore wrecks in the gulf but there are still some to be caught around the bay.

On our near shore gulf charters we are primarily bottom fishing with majority of the surface biting fish like king mackerels moving offshore.  Always keeps your eyes open though because with cooler water temps we do see blackfins move to the beach.  We have been seeing some on the tidelines and around schools of bait inshore.  While bottom fishing the vermilion snappers "aka mingos snappers", white snappers, and flounder are our prime targeted species with majority of the other fish being closed season.  There are lots of amberjack, Redsnappers, and Triggerfish but don't forget they are closed for the rest of the year.  This is the time of the year that Flounder migrate to inshore gulf wrecks,  If you catch one there are usually plenty more around.

If you are planing a trip to Destin, Florida this fall or winter, Destin Inshore Guides fishes year around so be sure to give us a call and let us take you out to catch your next memory of a lifetime. Till next time Tight Lines.

Captain of the Year 2018 Destin Fishing Rodeo in Destin, Florida

11/24/2018

2018 Destin Fishing Rodeo was a huge success for Destin Inshore Guides with lots of great memories.  This year's Destin Fishing Rodeo is one that Capt Josh will never forget.  Capt Josh received the first fish in the rodeo award as well as having the most fish entered (82 entries) for the entire month out of all the boats.  Thanks again for all our clients that came down in October to fish with Destin Inshore Guides to be apart of the 2018 Destin Fishing Rodeo.  The Destin Fishing rodeo is one of our favorite parts of the season and is a huge part of our town's heritage and history.  October is something Destin, Florida as a whole looks forward to year after year with the Destin seafood festival and Destin Fishing Rodeo taking place.

This years Rodeo started off with a bang with great weather and great fishing.  Capt Josh was able to put several fish on the overall board this first week that stuck the entire month.  Everything was great till we were thrown a curved ball with a Hurricane aiming right for our area.  We were blessed that the storm made a turn at the last minute and we escaped the strongest hurricane in the past century with very little damage in our area.  We were able to get back to our normal daily life after a  couple days.   Our neighbors to the east weren't as fortunate and we continue to donate and pray for their recovery.  As we got back to fishing after the storm we were thrown another curve ball with Red tide in our area.  We were very fortunate that it was scattered and we were able to fish around it the rest of the month.   At the end of the month we finished off with 67 daily winners and on the big leader board finished 1st and 2nd place in the Redfish division, 1st place Amberjack, and 1st place blacksnapper.  Congrats again to all  of our lucky anglers in this years rodeo and we look forward to doing it again next year.

The last award Destin Inshore Guides brought home was the Captain of the Year award for our division.  For the second year in a row Capt Josh was awarded the Captain of the Year award.  Receiving this award from the Destin Fishing Rodeo two years in a row means a lot to Capt Josh as he fished with a lot of old time captains in the rodeo that he looked up to growing up as a kid.  We want to thank all our clients for choosing Destin Inshore Guides to take them fishing, none of this would be possible without y'all.

Destin, Florida Fishing Report for Inshore Bay Fishing Charters and Gulf Fishing

10/17/2018

October is in full swing and the 2018 Destin Fishing Rodeo is off to a great start.  Destin, Florida dodged a bullet and had hardly any damage from the Hurricane.  The weather has been great since the storm has passed and we have been fishing every day.   Don't forget the Destin Fishing Rodeo goes on the Entire month of October and if you're looking for a fun outing the weigh ins start at 10am every day and the scales close at 7pm.  The best time to see some of the bigger fish is from 5-7pm as all the big boats going out for 12-18hrs are coming back in at that time.  We are still seeing Red Tide Scattered but the fish are still biting and the fishing has been good.

On our Inshore bay fishing charters the bite has been great most days.  As the water temps begin to cool off we should see the red tide disappear.  As far as the fishing the mangrove snappers still continue to be a hot bite and we are catching some good sized ones ranging from 12-16 inches.   Don't forget these mangrove snappers are one of the best eating fishing inshore so get the oil ready.  Along with the mangrove snappers red fish have also been hitting pretty good.  This has been an unusual year as we have not been seeing big numbers of the big bull reds lately and majority of the redfish have been in the slot size.  So far we have 1st and 2nd place redfish in the Destin Fishing Rodeo with a 7.6lber and a 7.4lber.  There has still been a lot of bait hanging around and we have been catching some spanish mackerel and jack crevalle around the schools of bait.  As the month goes on and into next month Flounder should be taking the hot seat as they migrate from our bay to near shore wrecks in the gulf.

On our near shore gulf charters we are seeing good sized spanish mackerel and the kings are starting to pick up.  The fall is also the time of the year that the blackfin tunas start moving inshore towards the beaches.  We have been seeing some on the tidelines and around schools of bait inshore.  While bottom fishing the vermilion snappers "aka mingos snappers" have been hot, we are also catching amberjacks wrecks.  As far as Redsnappers and Triggerfish you can catch as many as you want but don't forget they are closed for the rest of the year.

Don't forget the Destin Fishing Rodeo takes place the entire month of October, so you still have some time to get out and try to get on the board.  Destin Inshore Guides' boats are all registered vessels, so if you come fishing with us you have the opportunity to win some prizes.  We have limited availability the rest of the month so call ahead and book your trip.

As always if you are planing a trip to Destin, Florida be sure to give us a call and let us take you out to catch your next memory of a lifetime. Till next time Tight Lines.

Fall is right around the corner and we are seeing cooler temps in the early morning and late evenings.  Fall is a great time to visit and fish in Destin, Florida.  If you don't have anything tying you down to vacation this time of the year its the best time to visit Destin, Florida.  With all the kids back in school there is a fraction of the people visiting the area meaning no wait times or traffic and the weather is still perfect to enjoy the beach.  Some days you may feel like you are on a private secluded beach with very few people depending on where you stay.  As for the fishing as the weather begins to cool off the bite tends to heat up.

On our Inshore bay fishing charters the bite has been great most days.  As the water temps begin to cool off as we go into the fall the bite will continue to be great.  The mangrove snappers still continue to be a hot bite and we are targeting them heavily as they make for great meal being the best eating fish caught inshore.  Along with the mangrove snappers the next main species that we are targeting are redfish.  Here lately we have been getting on the slot reds almost every trip.  It is still fishing and every day is new day but the redfish should be a consistent bite all throughout the fall.  The next couple months are the prime time for targeting redfish as they get ready for their spawning time they will be feeding more and more on the out going tide.  The last week of September and first week of October is generally the best time to target the trophy sized ones as they are gorging themselves and majority of the fish will have huge full bellies.  If you are serious about targeting bull reds we book these trips based on the out going tide. Some days it may be in the morning while other days it could be later in the afternoon.  With the abundance of bait hanging around we are also catching a variety of other fish including spanish mackerel, bluefish, and jack crevalle still.

On our near shore gulf charters we are targeting spanish mackerel, king mackerels, and bonitas while trolling.  The fall is also the time of the year that the blackfin tunas start moving inshore towards the beaches.  We have yet to see any but its just a matter of time before they show up.  While bottom fishing in the gulf the targeted species have been  trigger fish, vermilion snappers "aka mingos snappers", white snappers, mangrove snappers, and amberjack.  We have also caught an occasional cobia with fishing wrecks for amberjacks.

Don't forget the Destin Fishing Rodeo take place the entire month of October.  This is a month long fishing tournament that Destin puts on for charter boats as well as private boats.  Its a great place to hangout at night watching fished weighed in.  Destin Inshore Guides enters the rodeo every year, so if you come fishing with us you have the opportunity to win some prizes.  We are booking up for the month of October so be sure to call ahead and book your trip.

As always if you are planing a trip to Destin, Florida be sure to give us a call and let us take you out to catch your next memory of a lifetime. Till next time Tight Lines.

Wow, how is Summer Break 2018 already coming to an end.  Some kids started school last week while others started back today.  Sounds like there are only a few areas that still have a week of summer break left.  What an incredible summer it has been in Destin, Florida.  We couldn't of asked for better weather with only having a handful of days were it rained all day.  You can definitely tell its August with hot summer days.  The next several weeks are typically the best time for the ones not tied down with kids going to school to plan a vacation to Destin, Florida.  The weather is still perfect and there is hardly any crowds with all the kids going back to school.  Some days you may feel like you are on a private secluded beach with very few people.  On to what what has been biting.

On our Inshore bay fishing charters the bite has been good.  The mangrove snappers continue to be a hot bite and we are still targeting them heavily.   What a great dinner these fish make.  Along with the mangrove snappers the next main species that we are targeting are redfish.  The next couple months are the prime time for targeting Bull Redfish as they get ready for their spawning time they will be feeding more and more on the out going tide.  This is the best time of the year to target the trophy sized ones as they are gorging themselves and majority of the fish will have huge full bellies.  If you are serious about targeting bull reds we book these trips based on the out going tide. Some days it may be in the morning while other days it could be later in the afternoon.  With the abundance of bait hanging around we are also catching a variety of other fish including spanish mackerel, bluefish, and jack crevalle.

Our on our near shore gulf charters we are targeting spanish mackerel, king mackerels, and bonitas while trolling.  As of August 1st the trigger fish and Amberjacks have reopened.  The Red snapper season closed for 2018 on July 20th and will be on the list of species to catch and release.  While bottom fishing in the gulf the targeted species are trigger fish, vermilion snappers "aka mingos snappers", white snappers, and amberjack.

Wow, this heat is getting hot.  You can definitely tell its summer with the humidity in the early mornings and the hot afternoons.  We have very limited availability the remaining of the summer to be sure to call asap if your planing on going fishing.

On our Inshore bay fishing charters the bite has been good.  We have been targeting mangrove snappers heavily as they are one of the best eating fishing both in the bay and the gulf.  Along with the mangrove snappers the next main species that we are targeting are redfish.  We are catch all ranges of redfish here lately from rat reds, to slot reds to bring home to diner as  well as big trophy sized bull reds.  If you are wanting to target bull reds we are booking these type trips based on the out going tide. As for the the grass flats they are still holding good amounts of bait bringing a variety of fish to the flats including skipjacks, spanish mackerel, bluefish, and some trout.

Out in the gulf on our near shore gulf charters we are targeting spanish mackerel, king mackerels, and bonitas while trolling.  The shark fishing continues to be good with  blacktips and spinners sharks on light tackle on the beaches as well as a variety of bigger sharks on the reefs.  Red snapper season has come to an end for 2018 so they will be added to the list of species to catch and release.  While bottom fishing we are also targeting trigger fish, vermilion snappers "aka mingos snappers" and white snappers.  Along with the redsnapper amberjack and triggerfish are both out of season but we are catching them for great catch and release photos.   Don't forget amberjacks do open back up on August 1st.

Destin, Florida Inshore and Bay Fishing Report - July

7/16/2018

Wow, the July heat is getting hot and so is the fishing.  We are booked up most days and filling up fast so if you are thinking of going fishing while visiting Destin, Florida area make sure to call and book your trip now.

On our Inshore bay fishing charters the bite has been good.  We are still finding an occasional trout but not really focusing on trout fishing unless by request with water temps getting hot, they are starting to move to deeper water and towards the rivers and there is plenty of action elsewhere. The grass flats are holding good amounts of bait bringing a variety of fish to the flats including skipjacks, spanish mackerel, bluefish, and some trout.  We have had a good bite fishing structure like docks and the bridges where we are catching redfish and the mangrove snapper bite is heating up.  If you're wanting to target some big bull reds we have been doing well on the outgoing tide soaking big baits around the bridges, as well as spot casting them on calm days on the flats and down the beach.  With all the bait fish being plentiful the skipjacks, spanish mackerel, and bluefish have been providing plenty of action.

Out in the gulf on our near shore gulf charters we are targeting spanish mackerel, king mackerels, and bonitas while trolling.  The shark fishing has been red hot the past week with plenty of blacktips and spinners sharks on light tackle on the beaches as well as a variety of bigger sharks on the reefs.  We are going into the last few days of snapper fishing and the inshore bite has gotten tougher and we are having to go to lighter tackle to get some bites. While bottom fishing we are also targeting trigger fish, vermilion snappers "aka mingos snappers" and white snappers.  The red snappers are open season until July 20th. As for amberjack and triggerfish they both went out of season but we are catching them for great catch and release photos.

Dont forget this is the prime time for tarpon fishing.  These fish are a catch of a lifetime and people travel all over the world targeting these amazing creatures.  Most average around 80-100 pounds and they are still able to jump completely out the water up to 5-6'. Just remember targeting a tarpon is like targeting a world class trophy buck there is always that chance of being completely skunked when targeting them.  Give us a call to book your next family fishing adventure while visiting the Destin, Florida area this summer.

Here lately on our inshore bay fishing charters we have been catching a variety of species.  The redfish continue to be a target as these fish are a year around fishery for the Destin, Florida area.  We are catching there around structure as well as on grass flats.  The Spanish mackerel and bluefish bite has been red hot trolling artificial lures, casting jigs, and using live baits when we are able to find good sized ones.  With the fin baits starting to show up on the grass flats, the grass flats fishing is starting to happen with speckled trout, redfish, spanish mackerel, and bluefish mixed.

On our inshore gulf fishing charters the bite has been good as well.  While trolling we have been targeting king mackerel, spanish mackerel, and amberjacks.   Amberjacks are still in season untile June 1st.  While bottom fishing we are targeting a mix bag of  snappers including white snapper, mingo snapper, and mangrove snappers along with triggerfish and redsnappers.

Red snappers and trigger fish are out of season but still make for great time to perform "CPR" (Catch, Photograph, and Release)
